Well, it happened. After 2+ years of staying indoors, steaming mail, hundreds (thousands?) of dollars in food and grocery delivery fees and not seeing another human in-person we FINALLY got COVID-19. Due to our youngest, Mabel’s genetic disorder, we played things definitely on the ‘better safe than sorry’ side of the equation. After at least 3 hospital stays in her earlier years we feared if she got it then the worst would have a higher probability of happening. Evey got COVID. Jodie got COVID. I got COVID. And, yes, Mabel got COVID. What’s interesting is everyone’s level of misery was way different. We’re all vaccinated, boosted yet I’m the only one who got the bivalent booster. Evey had a fever, snot and cough for a few days, Jodie was feverish, snot and cough for a few days, Daddy (me) was mildly feverish with mostly snot and the occasional cough. But Mabel. Mabel was a surprise. With the 3 of us having gotten it, Mabel was still holding out. No symptoms whatsoever, everything was normal as can be. And to keep her from getting what everyone else had (which is tough with a 1 bathroom house) I was Lysol-spraying any surface and room that Mabel could have come into contact with. Her mother and sister, both afflicted at almost the same time, were shuddered into their respective rooms. Dad would sleep out on the couch and not go into the bedroom were infectious Mom was lying so as to keep Mabel away from the germy-germ-germs. I, then Jodie, kept Mabel from getting COVID from her sick family members for a good 6 days. So when her school nurse called that afternoon to tell us Mabel was sleepy during lunch and was showing a fever, our hearts sank. “ohhhh shiiiit,” was the feeling between me and her Mom. The first day she was lethargic and had a fever. She got a nap that day and went to bed earlier than usual. Pretty much the same the next day: slight fever, nap, bed early. But soon after that she showed signs of getting back to normal already. Needless to say, we were pleasantly surprised. Our delicate little flower had effectively dealt with COVID for only about 2 days before she bounced back to her normal self! We were waiting for the other ‘shoe to drop’ but it never did (knock on wood). Ironically, the one person we were doing this all for so as not to have a hospital stay or worse was the LEAST affected by COVID. Now, of course the strain of the virus matters. If this was during the ‘delta’ variant of Coronavirus it might have been a different story. BUT WE’LL TAKE IT! As I type this, she’s stuck at home, watching her beloved ‘Daniel Tiger’/‘Luna’/‘Curious George’/‘Super Why’ shows waiting for her 10 day infectious period to pass so she can go back to school. Happy as can be. The only leftover symptoms from her COVID seems to be just that she gets tired a little earlier in the night then she used to. As we’re eating dinner around 630pm she kind of has that look on her face of: ‘where’s my bed?’ Aside from that, though, she seems to be all good. Which is perfect considering today is her 8th birthday. Happy birthday, Mabel!
